Knee Injection FBPT

Steroid injections and gel injections are both used to treat knee osteoarthritis, but the way they work is different. Steroid injections, including corticosteroids, are typically used to help control pain and inflammation; especially when the knee is flared up or swollen. People usually notice an improvement within several days. However, relief may only last a few weeks to months. The number of steroid injections given in a specific area may also be limited due to the potential to affect cartilage over time.

Gel injections, sometimes called hyaluronic acid injections, aim to lubricate and cushion the knee joint. They work more slowly than steroid injections, but may provide longer-lasting relief. People with mild to moderate arthritis and/or chronic stiffness tend to get better results with gel injections compared to those with chronic inflammation or severe end stage arthritis. Neither treatment can cure arthritis, and their effectiveness can vary person to person, so based on symptoms, arthritis severity and your goals, your doctor will help you decide which might be the best for you.
