Post Concussion Treatment & Therapy
Furnace Brook Physical Therapy created a structured concussion treatment program for those post-concussion patients that might require more supervised concussion therapy, and extended medical management. Though most concussions will get better with rest and won’t require any other treatment, research highlights the need for proper rehabilitation to treat and prevent the more limiting complications from post-concussion syndrome. A team approach that includes the patient, parent (when applicable), physician, and physical therapist is necessary to best manage recovery. A physical therapist is able to evaluate and treat many of the problems related to concussion. A customized physical therapy treatment program is established for each individual patient that may address symptoms of imbalance, dizziness, fatigue, weakness, and neck pain. Athletes will need to be gradually progressed through a graded exercise program before they return to play. The focus of physical therapy is to provide education, decrease symptoms, and restore normal function.
